CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Arthur Canon: Inception Age: Somewhere between 24-30; let's say ~28 If Under 16, why is this character a good thematic fit for Somnia?: N/A Canon Point: Midway through the inception job– on the plane to Los Angeles Wiki Link(s):
1. Dreams are how Sleep chooses you. What might draw your character into Somnia— a wound, a wish, a weakness? Would they follow the dream, or run from it?
Arthur's entire life revolves around dreams and dreaming–specifically, that of dreamshare, utilizing the PASIV technology. While he's not one to be lured off track, especially not during the middle of a job when so much is at stake, it would be simple for Sleep to leave a proverbial bread crumb trail in the dreamscape Arthur is keeping stable during the inception job. He's not one to leave a stone unturned, nor will he ignore anything that seems odd or out of place. So, in essence, he would follow the dream to its completion.
2. Somnia is a slow unraveling—of worlds, and of selves. How does your character respond to fear, transformation, and losing control? Do they fight, adapt, collapse?
As a point man, his job is to make sure everything proceeds smoothly–which means he is the most in control at virtually all times. He keeps his head under extreme pressure, adept at bottling up his emotional responses until a better time comes round.
In the case of losing control or dealing with ambiguous circumstances, Arthur adapts. Dreams are changeable, shifting things, and he's learned how to manipulate their structures to suit his needs. Even when he's presented with unforeseen complications during the inception job–the hotel being subject to zero gravity–he's able to assess and quickly change how he was going to manage "kicking" the rest of the team while gravity was in flux.
All in all, he's an adapter and a fighter, and knows when to pick his battles.
3. Connection is the only constant. What kind of bonds does your character form— fast and burning, slow and wary, deep and desperate? How might that shape their time in this world?
Due to the nature of his profession, Arthur is a wary person. He is more than willing to work with differing personalities to achieve a goal, though he might be liable to nitpick or argue over methodology. If given the chance, he will research a person and their background thoroughly, to make sure he isn't met with any surprises. This makes him a bit slow to warm on a deeper level, since his paranoia causes him to keep most people at an arms' length.
Once someone has earned his warmth, his trust, he's as loyal as they come, willing to follow them to the ends of the earth.
4. What are two major forces in your character’s personality that are often in conflict? (Ex: logic vs emotion, power vs guilt, obedience vs rage, etc.)
On the surface, he's polished, logical, and a bit frosty. He takes pride in dressing well, in keeping it all together. When there's a plan to be made, he's the first to question any loopholes, nailing down any critical issues and making sure things would go smoothly.
All this seems to be at odds with how deep he cares, in the few glimpses it comes through in the film. When Ariadne questions him about what Mal Cobb was like in real life, he responds with heartbreaking softness: "She was lovely." And when Yusuf is testing his chemical compounds, Arthur appears to be the one to have signed up as the guinea pig, willing to put himself at risk to make sure things were done right for the team.
Underlining all of that is the fact he's following Dom Cobb to begin with, despite things getting progressively worse through the movie: he's helping his friend get back to his children, no matter what pains he has to go through to do it.
VESSEL SELECTION Which Vessel Type are you choosing: Token or Offering? Token Why does this Vessel type feel appropriate for your character? Arthur, while rather adaptable, lacks imagination. He takes part in dreamshare because of the possibilities of the technology, not out of any sense of a creative pursuit or escapism. Additionally, he seems to be quite comfortable and static in his view of his abilities and himself–he knows his limits and isn't one to pursue more power or chase ambition.
Most of all, he's a creature of control, and so would cleave closer to what he knows and understands. Choose one OR list three subclass options within your chosen Vessel type that you think would suit them:
