[ He hears the front door open and close, the familiar shuffle of Rey's footsteps down the small connecting hall. At this point, it's normalized enough that he doesn't turn, just goes about slicing carrots with dutiful precision. Arthur's never been a great cook, he doesn't have the imagination for it, but he can follow a recipe and hasn't burned anything outrageously.
However, he does pause when Rey speaks up, glancing over his shoulder. She's got a bit of sunburn on her cheeks and nose that make it look like she has a perpetual blush. It's cute. Even if he's refrained from saying so. ]
Welcome back. Also, just because I know my way around a gun doesn't mean I can't pull double duty as a housewife.
[Gender roles have never existed for her, not when she never had anyone to emulate or base things on. She did both roles herself, growing up. Providing food, protecting her home, cooking and cleaning, repairing things that broke down, it was all on her to do it herself and so if anything, watching Arthur being able to fend for himself is something she can admire more than anything else.
Still, she never can quite give up the urge to tease him.]
You're doing that wrong, though. Ryuji's showed me pictures of housewives where he's from, you're supposed to be naked under that.
[ Shifting his attention, he finishes chopping carrots, sliding them into a nearby bowl. He sets the knife aside, on one of the magnetic strips right by the stove. At Rey's comment, he lets out a little huff of a laugh– of course that comes from Ryuji. Of course. ]
You know, I'd be more into that if there wasn't a chance of dropping hot oil on my lap.
[ Just. Let that sink in. ]
But if you're impatient, you're welcome to get me out of this. [ Arthur glances at her, a sly smile on his mouth. ]
[She eyes him up and down again and does come closer, but when she reaches out it's not to touch him. It's to reach right past him and pluck one of the slices of carrots from the bowl, and as soon as she's popped it in her mouth and bitten down she makes a face.]
That tastes terrible. What is that?
[She's reaching for another one, though, and taking a moment to look it over, turning it over between her fingers as she frowns at it.]
Is it supposed to be so vividly colored? That usually means something is poisonous.
[ At first, he thinks that maybe she's rising to the bait. But then she breezes right past him, going straight for the bowl of freshly chopped carrots. Arthur barely suppresses the laugh at the expression on her face. Such intense disappointment. ]
It's called a carrot. Root vegetables. Most of them are pretty colorful, but not poisonous.
[ Beets, for example. Even if they look like they're bleeding over everything and stain like a bitch. ]
Are you going to frown at every piece you eat like it's just insulted you?
